The Great Tamasha

I remember watching the proceedings of the Lok Sabha as a kid just for fun of seeing the MPs fight and shout. I remember laughing at them so did the others around me. For the first time in my life, on July 21st and 22nd, 2008 I actually switched on the Lok Sabha Channel to listen closely to the national debates.

My thoughts.

The debates hardly affect the final voting. Tall leaders speak and try to score points against the others. Other MPs speak to show off their wit and humour, while still others try be serious about the whole issue but get interrupted so much that they give up.

Most of the politics is played out on National TV. A couple of channels like CNN IBN and NDTV are serious while others ... Samay, Star News, Aaj Tak ... are busy making it into a tamasha. The media has really fallen to new lows. Some anchors like Arnab Basu of Times Now think they are much above the others and carry out very biased debates. Of course the veterans like Rajdeep Sardesai and many others on CNN IBN are just a pleasure.

On the display of cash, twas very shameful. I am reading Advani's bio and its really sad that a person who is self made in politics and has some credentials could let this drama be enacted on national television. What really happened, I'm sure will never come out.

Now it will be interesting to watch how the next few months pass. Since the Left wont be able blackmail any more, lets see how the congress uses it new found freedom.

This drama is the real thing, way beyond what the script writers can ever conjure.
